Another Method using a Copper Resistor
If wires of two dissimilar metals are joined at both the ends and the junction formed at one of the ends, is heated more than the other junction, a current flows in the circuit due to Seebeck thermal emf. This effect is used in thermocouple temperature sensors.
The Peltier effect is the converse of above Seebeck effect, which means that if a current is forced through junctions of dissimilar metals, the junction will generate heat or absorb heat (cooling) depending on direction of the applied emf. This effect is used to make portable and small refrigerators.

Open Source Hardware (OSHW) is a term for tangible artifacts - machines, devices, or other physical things - whose design has been released to the public in such a way that anyone can make, modify, distribute, and use those things.

Supplementary to EMI/RFI/EMC Immunity of an Equipment. Many Installations are subject to Highly Disruptive Electrical Environment not just EMI. Depending on the budget and the situation a solution has to be found. Sometimes a CVT or an Isolation Transformer can do a lot of good. Converting all Energy inputs to battery energy and having a Isolated Synthetic Sine Supply may be an expensive but good solution. In my early learning/building days 80s/90s, Chips and Hybrids of Analog Devices and Burr Brown were very expensive and their performance was unquestionable. They made building sensitive and precision instruments easy for an Instrumentation design engineer.
Another brand that was good/expensive for analog was Datel-GE. Another GE company called Intersil made the best chip-solutions with cmos. They not only worked well, they were also affordable and had low power consumption.

This pair is my favorite when driving small solenoids or motors. SOT-32 12 Watts..
BD139 - NPN, 80V and 1.5A, 40 beta min.
BD140 - PNP, 80V and 1.5A, 40 beta min.
This means any small solenoid, relay or DC motor can be controlled with this. I would use it upto 24V DC and max of 1A for applications of full on and full off.
In applications like a regulator or variable motor control, you have to keep in mind the current thru and voltage across the transistor which results in power dissipation. Let us say it is driving 0.5A thru a motor in speed control and the Voltage across is 30V then the dissipation could be 30 x 0.5 = 15 Watts.
That is the reason we use switched regulators or switched controllers. So if we chop the DC and do PWM you have only the Switching losses and also a bit of DC loss. Switched controllers are also green, they save power for the same work done, but generate EMI-RFI and care is required in sensitive uV circuits. The transistors for switching are also special as they have to be fast with less capacitance, hence the mosfets are preferred in those applications. - ananth (san)

ADC are the Eyes and Ears for a uC, this brings the Real world as Numbers within the CPU. Without ADC a uC is like a Frog in the Well and has to create an Imaginary World for himself. That is beyond the scope of Engineering.
Bring your favorite PIC Microcontroller to his senses. Give him an ability to Perceive the Reality around him. Get him an Analog to Digital Converter and don't forget to code.
MAX1169 ADC is better than 4 1/2 Digit Value. For me the Intersil chip is a Benchmark. Beyond 5 1/2 Resolution may be needed only for Scientific Research.
I would say, 2 1/2 is like Analog Meters/Bar Graphs, 3 1/2 for Control systems, 4 1/2 for T&M and beyond 5 1/2 is for R&D.

Now we have low cost 3D CNC prototype makers. Rapid prototyping - additive or laser erosion. You can probably use this as a input for such a machine. Then you can fix it in a cabinet and complete the Mechanical Simulation. This will save wastage of parts, time and pcb's during prototyping.
