Electric Double Layer Capacitor - EDLC

The Electric double layer capacitor has the main use of a Charge Reservoir. That means a large amount of electrical charge in a small footprint.

These charge/discharge quickly unlike the battery, There is no Electrical Energy to Chemical Energy Transformation and back, like in batteries. It may need caution in design and usage as they may carry a lot of punch.

Also known as Ultracap, Goldcap, Supercap - Electric double layer capacitor, In Farads, like batteries, Energy Reservoirs or eFlywheel.

In Product Safety terms; The Battery has a Internal Resistance, but a Supercap does not. When used in Values like 100F and is fully charged, an Internal or External Breakdown of Insulation or Short Circuit may Occur. The Heat Generated is Enormous. Murphy's Law says such things happen..

  • Excess Vibration can alter Specs.
  • Caution - The maximum temperature.
  • Specs are dependent on Temperature.
  • Maintain Low ripple current on Charge/Discharge.
  • It is Polarized like a Electrolytic cap.
  • Not Hot parts or Heatsink near cap.
The Double Layer Capacitors developed by WIMA are storage capacitors with highest capacitance values in the Farad range.

Learn about Solid State Relays - SSR

Electromagnetic Relays - 

NO - Normally Open - when the relay is not energized or activated, this terminal is open-circuit.

NC - Normally Closed - when the relay is not energized or activated, this terminal is closed circuit.

COM - The Common Center Terminal in relays. This is the center terminal that closes circuit with NC-NO.

The terminals are potential free and floating and are insulated from the control signals or coil windings by many kilo volts. Many provide visible isolation. These terms apply to SSR or Big Contacters too.

    They are called SSR as there are made of semiconductors and have no moving parts to wear out. They do generate heat depending on load and switching. Thyristors are used in most as they are rugged, mosfets and IGBT may also be used for various applications.

    I have made some Web Widgets, these are analog opamp tutors. Interactive Tutorial with Simulated Meters and Potentiometers, demonstrating how Operational Amplifier functions in different configurations.

    Slide the Potentiometers just like you would operate a Sliding Control. Drag the Knob on Pot to increase or decrease the resistance. The Resistance is shown is blue letters and dynamically alters value as you slide the pot.


    The mV Source is varied by just moving mouse pointer over the two buttons, no clicking. This reduces finger strain and also you have a long lasting mouse. The mV buttons are special, the variation picks up speed if you let the mouse pointer remain on the button. This is Ramp-up and Ramp-down. This enables you to set it faster with just two buttons.

    Finally you have a DVM a Digital Volt Meter that just Displays the Voltage at any Point, this readout value has to be noted down.

    System-on-Chip - SoC - IP

    When a product has to be made small, the board real estate is limited or it has to be manufactured in large numbers.... SoC is the Answer. A Microprocessor evolved into a Microcontroller by packing many external chips into one chip. Now uC Card along with the other blocks like A-D, Port Drivers, Networking elements, Display Driver and other peripherals can be packed into one chip.

    Some Power Supply and RF blocks cannot be easily added inside as they have a silicon processing more specific to their applications. Laser trimmed Instrumentation Op-Amps, high accuracy resistor arrays, high value capacitors, magnetics and supporting chips are placed outside on the PCB.

    The SOC can pack Digital Chips, Memory, A/D, D/A converters, uC, RAM and Custom programmable areas. For more specialized communications, analog and power requirements; Special SoC types can tackle RF and Power management within a chip because of proprietary silicon processing expertise.

    Some of the early Philips (nxp) 8031 variations had integrated a lot of outer chips like A/D, D/A display driver etc. This made Programmable Industrial Instruments/Gadgets possible with just a few external components. Now many variations are available from chip manufacturers, with more speed, memory and peripherals inside. Futuristic gadgets may be intelligent, interactive, networked and portable. The SoC chip makes it all possible, by integrating all product functions within it except the user interface.

    Arduino Interfacing with Visual Basic

    I have tried VB2 and VB6. It is an easy environment for Hardware Engineers or Hobbyists to program. It means easy to code unlike C++. Programs made with the new VB may not be compact or fast; but as it runs on a Virtual DotNet Machine and is bug-safe and may not hang/boot too. The DotNet was MS answer to Java of Sun. Even Java is a simple language and it seems to be lighter too. DotNet of late has become a bigger download, more than 10 times the size it started with.

    MS can try Visual Basic Webapp on the Cloud using HTML5. Even remotely hosted DotNet is better, with the VB Apps as Web Applications using DotNet WebService. Then nothing to download, neither the update or the security fixes. Just provide something like jQuery for DotNet. Web VB would be a better thing for developers.

    Arduino is a QuickStart Embedded system, very useful in learning both the hardware and software elements of a system.


    From what i understand, the developed app can be burned into the device fully, no additional layer of OS or Firmware needed, It is all built in. In short the compiled binary can be either a stand-alone firmware(OS) or be a layer running over a Mobile OS.

    Now putting Ardunio and VB together, we get an Hardware/Software Environment that is easy on students and hobbyists too.

    OsciPrime is an Open Source Android high speed data acquisition hardware platform and Android oscilloscope application. All layers of the project - from hardware, to firmware, up to software - are well documented in great detail.

    Most simple DIY comb generators seem to run out of steam about 1 GHz. I recently ran into David Bowman’s 2.4 GHz circuit and measured an upper usable range of about 6 GHz. While greatly attenuated above 3 GHz, this circuit should still be valuable for measuring semi-anechoic chambers in the GHz ranges.
