Play-Hookey - Online Classroom

This Website is intended for those intrepid individuals who, for whatever reason, find themselves looking for a less than formal approach to useful education in a number of technical fields.

Play-Hookey - Online Classroom

Digital logic is at the core of all digital computers, and yet it is entirely based on three fundamental operations, designated AND, OR, and NOT. See how it's possible in these pages…..
These pages now include coverage of the major logic families as well as some practical experiments that you can perform with real components to see for yourself how they work.
  • DC Electronic Theory.
  • AC Electronic Theory.
  • Op Amps and Analog Circuits.
  • Take a look at optics.
  • What's inside these semiconductors?

Line Clock - Play-Hookey

"In many digital circuits, we need a regular and continuous train of pulses to control the timing of various circuits. In some cases, we want two separate pulse trains, one the inverse of the other. In other cases, we may want two square wave pulse trains in quadrature...."

Imagineering On-line Magazine

"Some people collect stamps, coins or baseball cards, I collect electronic circuit schematics. I own several book shelves and file cabinets full of electronic circuit books, IC application manuals and circuit encyclopedias. I often use my collection for reference."

Imagineering On-line Magazine

Capacitance Proimity Switch Technology -The Design Corner, Imagineering E-Zine

"These switch circuits used a sensitive high impedance circuit to detect the small AC power line signals, picked up by the human body from nearby appliances."

The Electronics Index of J. B. Calvert

Many may already know about these EE Educational pages with Circuits of J. B. Calvert.  These pages are valuable as they are like a summation of Important and Practical Sections in many EE Subjects. If you want to master the basics of EE, these pages will propel you in the right direction.

A Welath of Information is at the site - Dr James B. Calvert Associate Professor Emeritus of Engineering, University of Denver and Registered Professional Engineer, State of Colorado. An EE-Encyclopedia Almost.

Engineering and Technology - James B. Calvert
"An extensive series of pages based on experiments that can be done in the personal or home laboratory. The emphasis is on enjoyment and intellectual pleasure, but there is much practical matter as well."

Electronics Index - Includes vacuum tubes and cathode-ray tubes, with many experiments for the home laboratory. Nixie clocks too.

The Atmel AVR microprocessors are very similar functionally to the PIC microprocessors, with the same range in size from 8-bit, 8-pin PDIP to 32-bit processors with 100 pins, and similar features.
Atmel AVR 8-Bit Microcontrollers

The ATtiny13A will operate from a supply voltage as low as 1.8V (maximum clock speed 4 Mhz), and with a full 20 MHz clock speed at 4.5V and above. The current drain is much reduced at the lower supply voltages and clock frequencies.

A Magnetometer
It is easy to measure moderate magnetic fields using a Hall sensor, such as the Allegro A1302 linear Hall sensor, available from Jameco. A PIC12F675 can digitize the output of the sensor and display it on a serial LCD display, such as the Newhaven NHD-0216K3Z-FL-GBW 2 line x 16 digit display. This system is shown breadboarded in the figure at the right, measuring the field between the poles of a horseshoe magnet.

TR2003-35 Very Low-Cost Sensing and Communication Using Bidirectional LEDs

A novel microprocessor interface circuit is described which can alternately emit and detect light using only an LED, two digital I/O pins and a single current limiting resistor. This technique is first applied to create a smart illumination system that uses a single LED as both light source and sensor.

MERL - TR2003-35 Communication Using Bidirectional LED

Bidirectional communication with LEDs

These test boards use a simple protocol for data transfer which allows two unsynchronized devices to phase-lock to each other and exchange pulse-width- modulated data bidirectionally. A basic explanation of the protocol is that the two devices take turns flashing their LEDs at each other. A short flash indicates a 0 or SPACE state, and a long flash indicates a 1 or MARK state.

Professor Mark Csele - Projects and Hobbies

"I present, below, a collection of projects I have worked-on over the past few years. For over a decade, I had taught both embedded systems (microcontroller technology) and digital signal processing and practice what I preach...."

Nixie Thermostat - A heating and cooling thermostat employing technologies spanning fourty years from the unique Nixie tube display, circa 1960's, to a PIC 18F microcontroller, circa 2006.

A High-Powered Power Backup Inverter

A High-Powered Power Backup Inverter - The working prototype of the 2 KVA inverter is complete. Fed from an array of lead-acid cells totalling 600 Ah (at 12 Volts), it easily drives real-world loads such as single-phase motors. The inverter has been tested and found to operate at an efficiency of between 71% and 82% driving a variety of both inductive and resistive loads
